Matsushima is based on a hokku by Bashō. Matsushima is an archipelago of some 800 islands in an area 12 miles wide, densely forested with pine trees whose branches, blown by sea winds, are twisted into millions of different shapes. Matsushima was commissioned by Andrew Melvin.
