Part of On Track, UYMP's Education Volume for Key Stage 4.
This piece is based on an ancient folk song which has its origin in Southern Italy where an Albanian community has lived for more than five centuries. The tenderness of the melodic lines expresses their love for the distant homeland, which according to legend can be seen from the Calabrian mountain tops. As with most folk songs, the tune itself is remarkably short. The melodic contours of the original song have not been altered, but have now been presented in different ways as well as in different textural formats. The piece is based on Æolian mode with some added chromatic inflections, which most probably are as a result of the western influence of the Italian music.
