Having heard the Grant, Degens and Bradbeer organ many times as an undergrad at York, I was delighted to be asked to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this instrument with a new piece. Written in three movements, Ebor Excursions is a celebratory work. The outer movements (Prelude and Dance) are characterised by bustling textures and toccata-like figurations, whereas the middle movement (Nocturne) offers slow, tranquil music, consisting of long melodies and a lilting accompaniment. A simple, rhythmic motif links all three movements; present from the first bar, this musical cell is transformed throughout the entire work, only finding resolution in the final, blazing chord of Dance.
