Commissioned by Dark Inventions for their Firewheel project, part of the Sound and Music ‘Composer Curator Scheme’.
Three Inventions is a short collection of three melodies, one each for flute, clarinet and vibraphone. Each of these has a different character, and is accompanied by the other two instruments. Performers are invited to make many decisions about the music, small and large, ranging from when to place certain chords to what order to play the three movements in. Some of these decisions are individual, and many of them are collective, inviting the performers to engage with the material and create their own interpretation.
The piece was premiered by Dark Inventions in February 2014 at the Rotunda Museum in Scarborough.
