"missi-tuk (meaning a large river whose waters are driven into waves by tides or wind) is the Pequot name for the Mystic River, an estuary in the southeast corner of the U.S. state of Connecticut, close to New London. Its tributary Whitford Brook empties into Fishers Island Sound dividing the village of Mystic between the towns of Groton and Stonington. Although known primarily as the site of three large shipbuilding firms in the 19th century, the area of the missi-tuk was once the land of the Pequot Indians. Their village Siccanemos was built on the western bank of the estuary, and destroyed on May 26, 1637 during the Mystic Massacre" - Sadie Harrison.
