Sakellarides and Sammoutis are representatives of a younger generation and are composers who have connections to Greece and Cyprus. Both of their contributions to the Finding Ursula Vaughan Williams collection were originally conceived as larger works, though as autonomous songs the contributions may be performed as part of a varied programme of UVW settings.
In response to UVW’s embracing of ancient Greek culture, Sakellarides imbues his work with an eclectic mix of continental styles and Greek dance rhythms. In discussions about his work, he has revealed that the passions of operatic scena are a considerable driving force. He set the tripartite poem ‘The Swans’ as three stylistically-distinctive songs during 2009-10; two of these – ‘Place’ and ‘Elegy’ – have been selected for this volume. (Lee Tsang, 2010)
