Commissioned for the Nieuw Ensemble as part of the European Composers' Professional Development Programme in partnership with the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
A Thread, Entwined deals with the idea of a single, simple line, that weaves throughout the ensemble in various forms of density created by a kind of counterpoint of rhythmic layering. At times the line is strictly controlled; at other times the line freely meanders. Glimpses of an alternative harmonic and textural world are placed against the contrapuntal textures, and eventually the ensemble seems to completely enter this new musical environment. In this new context, the mechanical regularity of the line is heard again in a kind of simultaneity of worlds - like being somewhere between sleeping and wakefulness - before both musical concepts become entwined in one another, and form one new, single idea.
