This piece is part of a cycle of solo works that Simaku has been engaged with for some 25 years now. The cycle so far consists of nine works, all of which have been released on CD. Most recently, his Soliloquies VII, VIII, & IX for Clarinet, Marimba and Trumpet respectively, performed by soloists of Ensemble Intercontemporain, were released by the British label NMC Records.
As the composer writes in his programme note, “Soliloquy VI is perhaps the most idiosyncratic work of the whole cycle, in that it concentrates on the expressive qualities of the singing saxophone, which accompanies itself with certain virtuosic passages covering the whole range of the instrument”. Written for and dedicated to Anders Paulsson, Soliloquy VI received its world premiere on 20th November 2021 in Stockholm.
