Firewheel Anthology is a collaboration between new music ensemble Dark Inventions and UYMP, funded by an Arts Council England Grant for the Arts.
The project publishes seven pieces commissioned from emerging composers, who also received professional development mentoring from UYMP staff and composers. The title work Firewheel by Philip Cashian was commissioned with financial assistance from the Britten-Pears Foundation.
The pieces are for various combinations of an instrumental chamber ensemble of flute, clarinet, percussion, violin and cello. Three of the works are new folk song arrangements with voice: Death and the Lady, The Cruel Mother and The Shipwrecked Ghost.
In 2014, Dark Inventions took the Firewheel pieces on a tour of the UK, funded by Sound and Music, and in 2015 recorded them with soprano Stef Conner. The album is now available as a CD and digital download from: www.darkinventions.co.uk/recordings/firewheel/.
Firewheel Anthology was edited by James Whittle.
